If you don't think there are people out there who want to use the power of the State to regulate your lawful conduct even further, and to do whatever they can to make you a happy member of the Nanny State of Australia, consider this gem from the outer limits of the ratbag fringe - Gun-Control-Australia
Active anti-liberty lobbying in Australia is conducted by two main groups: Gun Control Australia and the National Coalition for Gun Control (NCGC). Gun Control Australia, in particular, knows a lot about lobbying from a position of ideological extremism. John Crook, the chief cook and bottle washer of ideological extremism himself, keeps the membership figures of his GCA confidential. Why? Because the truth of it is that there really aren’t that many - either absolutely, or by comparison - there's got to be at least three, John. - "Me, myself and I," as my dad used to say when I asked him “Who Says?”
Ever wondered why the Main Stream Media don’t talk much about a sporting club that has in excess of 120,000 members? They can't leave their offices because GCA is too busy talking their left legs off.
"Gun control groups in Australia have very few active members but a high media profile. ("High Media Profile" is media-speak for "entirely disproportionate influence given their occupation of the mental twilight zone between flaky and zealotry.) The main focus of these groups is on tightening firearm controls, reducing legal gun ownership in the hope of reducing the number of firearm-related deaths in Australia.
The problem is that it's illegal gun ownership that features in the crime figures.
Not quite as vociferous today as she once was, Ms. Samantha Lee, was until 2006 the chair of the NCGC. The NCGC has no website or public contact details and does not solicit public membership. Ms. Lee is now working within the NSW Attorney-General's Department. Her main written contribution to gun control debate is her Churchill fellowship report. In it she argued that current handgun legislation was too loose. She cited statistics showing that handgun crime is rising, and that the types of handguns used in crime are legally available. Lee also argued that police officers who enjoy recreational shooting have a conflict of interest, and that licensed private firearm ownership per se presents a threat to women, and children in particular.
Funny, I feel that the number of sharp scissors in Australian households, per se, presents a threat to people who find themselves in that dangerous activity of running. Do you think Churchill would give me a fellowship for studying the dangers of running with scissors?
Lee's selective use of statistics has been widely discredited. It does no good. That is like telling Osama Bin Laden he needs a haircut.
Stay tuned.

The growing ideological extremism of the shooting fraternity, is one of the real worries for the safety-loving people of Australia. In other words, we must not permit these extremists to convince uneducated citizens of any need, desire, sporting purpose, or perceived self-defense reason to own guns. Their propaganda in this regard must be hushed and kept to nothing more than a quiet whisper.
